I had such a blast photographing Max and Anthea’s Chicago Union Station engagement this fall! The couple has a deep love for architecture, so Union Station, with its grand design and historic beauty, was the perfect backdrop. Max and Anthea secured a photo permit, allowing us to capture their engagement session inside the station, which was a must given the weather that day. It was cold and rainy outside, but thankfully, Union Station offered a dry and elegant indoor setting that elevated every shot.
To photograph inside Union Station, a photo permit is required, which costs around $150. The process is pretty straightforward: you have to apply in person with a money order or cashier’s check. The permit allows you to use the interior spaces of Union Station, making it possible to explore its iconic staircases, dramatic pillars, and hidden pockets of light. I always love playing with the station’s natural light and architectural details—so many opportunities for portraits that look straight out of a magazine.
Max and Anthea were so natural in front of the camera, and we explored all over Union Station, capturing their love in this beautiful setting. After we wrapped up the indoor session, we headed outside to shoot under the iconic pillars. Pro tip: you don’t need a permit to photograph around the exterior sign and pillars, so even if you’re on a tighter budget, you can still capture some amazing shots outdoors.
We ended the session with a fun, relaxed stop at their favorite bar, The Pendry Hotel bar. It holds a special place in their hearts, so it was the perfect way to wrap up the day—with a cocktail and some fries. It felt like the ideal blend of elegance and authenticity. Congrats again to Anthea and Max on your Chicago Union Station engagement! I can’t wait to capture your winter wedding later this year!
