This past winter, I had the absolute honor of capturing Sherman and Samantha’s winter Chicago elopement. As a Chicago elopement photographer, there’s something so magical about photographing love stories that unfold in the intimacy of a city, even in the chill of winter.
Sherman and Samantha’s story began far from Chicago—in Ecuador, to be exact. Sam’s brother was one of Sherman’s classmates in grad school. He organized a trip back to Ecuador for some of his fellow students. The two of them bonded while riding horses in the mountains, and what began as a unique connection turned into a year of keeping in touch before they finally decided to take a chance on dating. Since then, they’ve navigated a long-distance relationship, slowly closing the gap between them. From different countries to now being separated by a mere four-hour drive or a 30-minute flight between Chicago and Iowa City, they couldn’t be more grateful to have found a rhythm that works.
Their winter elopement began at Chicago City Hall, where they exchanged vows in front of a judge and their immediate family. The ceremony was intimate and heartfelt—exactly what they envisioned. Afterward, the couple shared private vows with one another. It was a deeply personal moment that allowed them to express their love in their own words. Their hearts were poured out to each other in such a moving way, and their little bubble of love was completely absorbing.
Once the official and private vows had been exchanged, the city was ready to be explored. Our first stop was the Wrigley Building, its iconic architecture providing the perfect backdrop. Sherman and Sam wanted to include a mix of cityscapes in their photos, so we also stopped in front of the Marine Tower. Despite the cold, they were all smiles, making it clear that nothing could dampen their joy.
For our final location, we headed to Milton Lee Olive Park. Braving the lakefront in winter is no small feat, but the views were worth it. With Lake Michigan stretching out behind them and the Chicago skyline in view, Sherman and Sam held each other close. There’s something about a winter Chicago elopement that brings out such a cozy, romantic vibe, and these two embraced it beautifully.
As a Chicago elopement photographer, it’s always inspiring to witness and capture love stories like Sherman and Samantha’s. Their day was a reminder that love isn’t bound by location or distance. It’s about finding your person and making the journey together. Congrats to Sherman and Samantha! Your story is as beautiful as the city you chose to start this next chapter in. Thank you for letting me be part of your incredible day!
